Great Coffee, Brilliant Breakfasts!

Cafe at 36 serve great coffee that is freshly ground for each order and made on our lovely La Marzocco espresso machine. They have also just introduced TeasMe tea, which is blended in Devon.

Owner John says:-

Our cooked breakfast has been described as the best hangover breakfast in Exeter. We also offer soups, paninis, sandwiches, toasties and savoury flans, jacket potatoes. American Pancakes with maple syrup and much more.

They also make their own cakes and tray bakes and offer cream teas both savoury and sweet.

The Heart of the Community

Located in the heart of the community, Cafe 36 support and get involved with the local community. Their customers see the cafe as a hub for the area. It is also important to owners Sue and John to support local charities and they are helping to get the first St Thomas Music and Arts festival off the ground in September 2013.

Customers will always find a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere

They also have one or two famous customers. Steve Bennett who usually plays the Dame in local Christmas Pantomines and also played a police officer in Broadchurch pops in sometimes. He has also been seen being hounded by Roy in Roy’s Rolls Cafe in Coronation Street!

Supporting Local Suppliers

John says that the cafe wants to provide quality products, whilst supporting local food producers and suppliers as much as possible. For example, the local butchers Courtneys supply all of the bacon, ham and sausages – handmade by themselves. The bread is from Shaldon Bakery, and the curd cheese for their savoury cream tea is produced by Langage Farm. JB Preserves based in Ivybridge supply the chilli jam. Soft drinks are supplied by award winning Luscombes and Frobishers based in Exeter.

The Cafe at 36 Story

John says:-

“We took the Cafe over in early 2011. Having always wanted to run our own cafe, when Cafe at 36 came onto the market, as it was so local to our home and community, John retired from his job as a railwayman and decided to work in the cafe.

We chose Exeter because we have always lived in Exeter and it is a beautiful city in which to work. And we can walk there in 10 minutes! We love working in the local community and knowing all of the other traders, developing a loyal customer base and being able to add the X Factor to our cafe.

For example, Love Local Food, based just outside Exeter, run a storytelling session for Under 8’s on the last Wednesday of each month; and we enable local artists to exhibit their work on our walls to help them gain more exposure.

But the best bit about running the cafe is when customers give us positive feedback!”
