South West’s Largest Indoor Climbing Wall
Enjoy climbing with your family or friends at the South West’s largest indoor climbing wall. Open since September 2011, the Quay Climbing Centre is located in the heart of Exeter’s Quayside in what was formerly the Old Electricity Building. The generating hall, which provided power to Exeter’s tram network, now provides a huge space in which to climb.
Climbing For Fun
The Quay is the perfect all weather destination, whether you are a committed outdoor sports enthusiast seeking shelter from inclement weather, looking for an action packed challenge or simply seeking something different to do in the city.
For beginners there are taster sessions, designed to teach you the basics of climbing in a safe and fun environment. The centre offers tailored sessions for families and children where you can learn to climb as a group and experience the thrills of scaling your first wall. The instructors will guide you through the basics in our dedicated teaching zone and all the kit is provided.
If you are celebrating a birthday then why not hold it at the Quay – the birthday party package is ideal for groups of climbers aged 7+ and includes an hour’s instructed climbing followed by food and drinks in our dedicated party room.
For Serious Climbers
For committed climbers there are routes for all levels on the top roped and lead walls which range from 7 to 14 metres high. With over 200 climbs to choose from and regular route setting there is something for climbers of all abilities and ages. For those seeking the ultimate challenge bring your 50 metre rope – you will need it on the lead wall!
If high walls are not for you, have a go at bouldering where you can climb without ropes on much lower walls. With two boulder caves, and regularly changed training circuits, there are challenges for those who just want to give it a go and those who can’t stay away from the rock. The new training room provides the perfect space in which to finesse your technique and build strength for indoor or outdoor climbs.
The centre runs a series of junior climbing clubs designed to teach youngsters the fundamentals of climbing. All the clubs follow the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS) which aims to accredit youngster’s achievements and takes them from the basics of their first knot to lead climbing and beyond. The youth squad regularly compete at a regional and national level.
Youngsters can join the holiday clubs held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during school holidays. They are a great way to meet like minded juniors and improve your climbing during the school holidays – the perfect wet or dry weather adventure challenge! All our junior and youth climbing activities are open to climbers aged 7+
The range of courses are perfect for adults wishing to learn to climb or improve particular areas of their climbing technique. If you are looking for a comprehensive introduction to the sport then we recommend a 4 week Introduction to Climbing Course – this course is run for 2 hours a week over 4 weeks.
The Step Up To Lead course is the perfect way to learn to lead climbs under the careful supervision of the instructors and for those wishing to gain formal teaching qualifications such as the Climbing Wall Award (CWA).
Not Just For Climbers!
The Workshop Café @ the Quay overlooks the climbing arena and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the view of the action after your climb, or watch your family and friends have a go!
There is a selection of hot and cold food plus a range of delicious homemade cakes as well as hot and cold drinks – there is also a small range of books and toys to entertain smaller children.
Check the website for details of special events, competitions, holiday clubs and other activities which run throughout the year.
A Great Experience!
The centre’s aim is to make your climbing experience fun and rewarding – right from the welcome from the receptionists who will greet you on arrival to the qualified instructors who are not only great climbers themselves but more importantly are passionate about sharing their love of climbing with everyone.
The Quay is the largest climbing space in Devon and as such provides a range of climbs and experiences for people of all ages and abilities – the climbs range in grade from 2’s and 3’s designed for the smallest of climbers to 8a+ for the most experienced climbers. With a dedicated teaching area there is the space for groups to receive tuition even at the busiest of times.
In addition the building is home to Europe’s first Clip n Climb – an amazing arena of 26 themed climbs offering challenges to all adventure seekers from the age of 4 upwards.
The Climbing Centre’s Story
The Quay Climbing Centre opened in September 2011 and was the brainchild of four local entrepreneurs. The team are all based in Devon and are keen climbers themselves. Their backgrounds are varied from finance, to the military to outdoor sports – together they bring a wealth of knowledge about the climbing industry and business management in general. They share a passion for climbing and more importantly, a passion for making climbing accessible to all people who want to have a go – whether they have experienced the thrill of scaling a wall before or not.
Their vision was to create a regional centre for indoor climbing in the South West that could serve as a base for schools, groups, individual climbers and regional youth climbing squads. Exeter was the ideal location for such a facility being at the geographical heart of the South West and the Old Electricity Building was the perfect site – providing the square metre-age and the height for the centre the team wished to open.
