Traditional Wet Fishmongers

Established in 1992 Gibsons Plaice is a traditional wet fishmongers supplying fresh local fish to the general public and the trade. They buy the majority of the fish from the smaller day boats landing into Brixham and Exmouth.

The owner Richard goes on a daily basis to Brixham fish market at 6am to personally buy the fish himself ensuring the quality of the fish is the best he can buy. Due to seasonal variations of the fishing this means they have in excess of 50 different species of fish and shellfish to choose from over the course of a year.

As well as the shop there is a mobile fishmongers van that visits a number of villages and also a separate free home delivery service to Exeter and the surrounding villages. Details of both can be found on our website or by phoning the shop. (details below)

With daily landings of fish and Richard’s enthusiasm for being at the market on a daily basis the quality of the fish presented on his display of ice is unsurpassed in the area. With the majority of the fish being bought from Devon fishermen and sold within Devon then we believe we help to keep the local economy afloat.

Gibsons offer a 10% discount to all NHS staff, Exeter students and teaching staff, police and armed forces.

Gibsons have been awarded Fishmonger of the Year twice in the last 6 years and were runner up in those years they didn’t actually win.

Gibsons have assisted in making TV programmes with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall on a number of occasions and provide fish for his personal use. This is a clear indication of how good he rates their efforts to sell the finest fish in the area.

The Gibsons Plaice Story

Rick’s father was a passionate fishermen and always wanted to have his own fishmongers. His passion for fishing was passed on to Rick and when he decided a change of direction was needed in his business life he found this shop for sale.

Rick says:-

“I also had a love of cooking fresh fish but found it hard to find the quality of product I desired, so I bought my own fishmongers shop with the sole intention of selling the best products available and I believe, as do my customers, that I continually meet that wish.”
