Exeter’s Violin Shop
Devon Strings is a violin shop in Exeter on Bartholomew West, just off Fore Street. They stock a wide range of violins, violas and cellos, from student outfits to professional instruments, both antique and new. They also have a large stock of violin, viola and cello bows.
As Devon’s leading violin shop we stock a wide range of accessories, including a comprehensive range of strings, cases, sheet music, shoulder rests, rosin and much more!
Along side the shop, there is a workshop.
We are experienced and professionally trained violin makers and restorers, happy to undertake work from small repairs and set up work to complex restorations, and taking great pleasure in the challenge of getting the best performance from every level of instrument, from small student violins to advanced cellos, both through set up and repairs.
We also take pride in ensuring that all the instruments that we sell meet our own high standards.
They will assess your own instrument, and are always happy to look at instruments and do not charge for verbal assessments and valuations. If you need an insurance valuation for your instrument they can also provide this service.
As well as making, repairing and restoring instruments they also offer a bow rehairing and repair service.
Devon Strings are all trained, qualified and experienced violin makers and restorers, and are able to offer expert advice and help on all aspects of your instrument – from care and maintenance, to advice on the sound and tone of your instrument, as well as assessments and valuations. Since they are such a specialist business, they have a great depth and knowledge in the field.
They are always happy to talk to and advise customers, from those who are complete beginners, right up to professional musicians.
Sidmouth Folk Festival
We will be taking our shop back to the Sidmouth Folk Festival once again this year. The festival runs from August 2nd to the 9th. Our stand can be found in the Music Fair marquee in Blackmore Gardens – do come and visit us there where we will have a wide selection of instruments, cases, strings, sheet music and other accessories.
The Devon Strings Story
Jonathan and Rebecca Springall are a husband and wife owners of Devon Strings say:-
We are violin restorers. We met whilst studying at the internationally renowned Newark School of Violin Making, before embarking on our careers as violin makers and restorers. Since opening our shop and workshop in Exeter, we have also been joined by James Stephenson. James also graduated from the Newark School of Violin Making, and brings yet more knowledge and experience to our business.
We have worked internationally, including managing respected violin repair workshops in the UK as well as overseas, teaching violin making at internationally acclaimed courses and undertaking repairs on many fine instruments. In 2008 we decided that we wanted to put our energy into getting our own violin business up and running.
Having looked at locations right across the UK, we settled on Exeter as our choice of destination since we could see that this area was lacking in the services which we wanted to offer, as well as the area having a very strong musical network, with a wide variety of music being played, from classical to folk as well as many other genres.
Now, quite a few years down the line, we are very settled and happy here in Exeter, and have fully immersed ourselves in the musical life of the area. Our business has gone from strength to strength, and continues to grow and expand, with new projects and ideas constantly on the horizon!
